Daily devotion – Peace for how long?

Prophecy of the Last Days

“The United States and Iran announced a ceasefire agreement to end their war, which began in late February. Mediated with the help of Pakistan and other nations, the deal includes a permanent end to military operations, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and an official signing ceremony in Switzerland.”

Reports continue to emerge of peace negotiations and ceasefire agreements involving major nations in the Middle East. Whether such agreements endure for months, years, or only a brief period, they remind us that the nations of the world are continually moving toward the prophetic events foretold in Scripture.

As students of Bible prophecy, we should not be surprised by the ongoing conflicts, alliances, and shifting political landscapes unfolding before our eyes. Jesus Himself warned that the last days would be characterized by wars, rumours of wars, international tensions, and increasing deception. Yet He also instructed His followers not to be troubled, knowing that God remains sovereign over the affairs of men.

At the same time, the world’s major military powers continue to expand their military capabilities. Nations such as China, Russia, the United States, and the nations of Europe are investing heavily in defence and strategic preparedness. While governments justify these actions for national security, the Bible reveals that a future period of unprecedented global conflict will ultimately unfold before the return of Jesus Christ.

China especially – China’s 2026 official defense budget is 1.91 trillion yuan (approximately US $277 billion), representing a 7% year-on-year increase. While this is the second-largest military expenditure globally, international analysts suggest the true spending is significantly higher than the publicly announced figure.

Iran may be pausing at this present moment, and various peace initiatives may bring temporary stability to the region. Yet the struggle surrounding Israel has always involved more than politics, economics, oil, territory, or military power. Behind the visible conflicts of our world is a spiritual battle that seeks to oppose God’s purposes and His covenant promises concerning Israel.

The Scriptures reveal that Satan’s desire is to hinder God’s redemptive plan and oppose the return of Jesus Christ, who will one day soon establish His Kingdom upon the earth and reign from Jerusalem. Therefore, believers should recognize that forces greater than presidents, parliaments, and military leaders are at work behind the scenes of human history.

The Bible also warns of a coming world ruler, described as the Antichrist and the Lawless One, who will arise during the future Tribulation period. His emergence will mark the beginning of events that will culminate in the glorious return of Jesus Christ.

Time is passing quickly. Our world is increasingly marked by moral confusion, spiritual blindness, and a growing disregard for the God who created mankind. Yet believers are not left in darkness. God has graciously given us His Word, including the prophetic Scriptures, so that we may understand the times and remain watchful.

Matthew 24:3-8

“Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?’ And Jesus answered and said to them: ‘Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, “I am the Christ,” and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.'”

The nation of Israel continues to occupy a central place in God’s prophetic timetable. Daniel’s prophecy points forward to a future seven-year period during which a world ruler will establish and later break a covenant with many.

Daniel 9:26-27

“And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined. Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering…”

As believers who anticipate the return of Christ, we look forward to the blessed hope of the Rapture of the Church and the fulfilment of God’s prophetic promises. While we cannot know the exact day or hour, we can recognize the season and remain faithful in our walk with the Lord.

Let us therefore not be ignorant of the times in which we live. Let us remain watchful, prayerful, and diligent in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ while there is still time. The signs around us remind us that this world is not our home, and that our redemption draws nearer with each passing day.

“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” — Matthew 24:44
