It’s All About Jesus
An Introduction to Matthew 7:7–29
There is likely a fellow Christian, either someone you know, or once knew, or whose biography or autobiography you have read — whose life you genuinely admire. Maybe it’s a grandparent who faced loss after loss and never lost their peace. A mentor who walked through a season that would have destroyed most people, and came out the other side still standing. A friend whose faith, when it was tested, held.
What made their life so solid? What was the difference between them and someone else who faced similar storms and simply crumbled?
That’s the question Jesus ends His longest sermon with. The Sermon on the Mount, covering everything from the Beatitudes to prayer, from worry to judgment, closes with a single, vivid image: two builders, two foundations, one storm, two very different outcomes. And the difference isn’t the storm. Both houses get hit by exactly the same rain, the same flood, the same wind. The difference is what’s underneath.
In this final section of Matthew 7, Jesus gives us five reasons to depend on Him — for our needs, for wisdom, for salvation, for truth, and for life itself. And underneath every one of them runs the same conviction: it’s all about Jesus.
We have a remarkable ability to make everything about ourselves. What can I get from this? What do I need today? Did that speak to me? But here’s the liberating truth: when we stop making it about us, and let Jesus be the centre of everything, life actually works better. Not easier, necessarily. But better. Stronger. More solid.
A life built on Jesus is a life that cannot fall.
