Build There
A Summary of Matthew 7:7–29
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.” — Matthew 7:24
We are all building a life. There’s no opting out of that. The only question is what we’re building it on.
Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with one of the most vivid pictures He ever painted: two builders, side by side. Same neighbourhood, same plans, same storm. One house stands. One falls. And the difference, the only difference, is the foundation. The wise builder heard Jesus’ words and did them. The foolish builder heard them too, and didn’t.
Look back across the final section of this sermon and notice something: Jesus presents everything in pairs. Two gates. Two ways. Two destinations. Two trees. Two kinds of fruit. Two builders. Two foundations. He never offers three options, never a comfortable middle ground, never a sliding scale. Just two. Because in the end, every human life reduces to one of two realities: it’s all about Jesus, or it’s all about me.
The five threads Jesus has woven through Matthew 7:7–29 all pull in the same direction. We depend on Jesus for our needs — asking, seeking, knocking in persistent prayer. We depend on Jesus for wisdom — to love others as ourselves, not just avoid harming them. We depend on Jesus because He is the Way — the narrow gate, exclusive in path but open to all in welcome. We depend on Jesus because He is the Truth — the standard against which every voice is measured. And we depend on Jesus because He is the Life — the only foundation that holds when the floods come.
The storm is coming. It comes for everyone. The question is not whether your life will be tested, but whether it will stand when it is.
Build on the rock. Build there.
