Yes. Someone Exactly Like You.
A Summary of Matthew 8:1–17
“He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.” — Matthew 8:17, quoting Isaiah 53:4
Three people. Three different needs. Three different ways of approaching Jesus. The leper came personally, desperate and unclean. The centurion came on behalf of someone he loved, fully aware he had no right to ask. Peter’s mother-in-law didn’t come at all — she simply lay there, and Jesus came to her.
And in every case, the answer was the same: yes.
His grace is not reserved for the deserving. His power is not reserved for the impressive. His compassion is not reserved for the important. He helps the unclean. He helps the unworthy. He helps the overlooked.
Matthew tells us why, quoting the prophet Isaiah: He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. These healings were never merely demonstrations of power for their own sake. They were previews and signposts pointing forward to the cross, where Jesus would take on Himself the full weight of human suffering, sin, and shame.
He did not merely touch the unclean, He bore our uncleanness. He did not merely welcome outsiders, He was cast outside the city for us. He did not merely notice the overlooked, He was Himself despised and rejected by men.
So come to Him. Exactly as you are. Unclean, unworthy, overlooked, for none of it disqualifies you. He has never once turned away anyone who came to Him, and He will not start with you.
If you feel unclean, His answer is, “I am willing.” If you feel unworthy, remember that He never asked the centurion to become worthy before helping him. If you feel overlooked, His answer is, “I see you.”
The answer Matthew 8 gives is unmistakable. Yes. Jesus helps people exactly like you.
