Commission: Every Christian Is Sent Somewhere
Read: Matthew 10:5–15
When Jesus commissions the Twelve, some of His instructions were specific to that moment and to that mission: go only to Israel first, take no money or spare sandals. That was a short-term, foundational mission, not a permanent policy for every believer in every era. By the time we reach the Great Commission in Matthew 28, the mission has already opened to all nations.
But underneath the temporary details sits a permanent pattern that’s still ours today. Proclamation paired with demonstration — words about Jesus backed up by acts of mercy and generosity, because a gospel that’s all talk and no compassion undercuts its own message. Freely receiving and freely giving, refusing to hoard or commercialise what grace has given us. Representing Christ faithfully wherever we’re welcomed, rather than restlessly chasing something better. And staying intentional — actually looking for the open doors God has already placed around us, rather than sailing past them consumed by our own agenda.
Here’s the truth for all believers today: every Christian is sent. Not just missionaries with a plane ticket and a support team. Teachers are sent. Builders are sent. Nurses, tradies, students, retirees — sent. Your mission field already exists, and it’s called your actual life: the people you already see every week, the conversations already available to you.
You don’t need a passport to be an apostle to your own street. You need eyes open to the doors that are already cracked, and the courage to walk through one of them this week.
