When Faith Starts to Waver
“Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” — Matthew 11:3
John the Baptist had seen Jesus with his own eyes. He had baptised Him. He had watched the heavens open. He had heard the Father’s voice. He had pointed others toward Jesus and declared Him to be the Lamb of God.
And now John was sitting in prison asking, “Are You really the One?”
It is one of the most surprising moments in the Gospels. Where once John had been certain, now he was struggling.
Perhaps you know something of that experience?
You believed God would answer, but He didn’t. You prayed for healing, but the diagnosis remained. You trusted God with your family, but things became more complicated. You expected a door to open, but instead it seemed to close. Sometimes our circumstances begin whispering questions that our faith struggles to answer.
But notice what Jesus did with John’s doubt.
He did not shame him. He did not say, “After everything you’ve seen, how can you possibly ask this?” Instead, Jesus pointed John back to what God was doing. The blind were seeing. The lame were walking. The deaf were hearing. The dead were being raised. The gospel was being preached.
Jesus reminded John that his circumstances did not tell the whole story.
And perhaps that’s what you need to remember today. Your unanswered prayer does not mean God is absent. Your disappointment does not mean God has failed. Your questions do not mean you have ceased to believe.
Yes, faith sometimes wavers. When it does, don’t run from Jesus.
Run to Him.

Lord Jesus, when my faith begins to waver, help me bring my questions to You rather than running from You. Remind me of Your faithfulness and help me trust You even when I cannot understand what You are doing. Amen.
