Economic Warnings and Red Flags
One of the things the Antichrist will do when he assumes power during the Tribulation period is take control of the world’s economy. His power will be worldwide, and he will introduce a system of buying and selling that will be directly connected with the worship of him as the world’s leader and false “messiah”.
This is why he is called the Antichrist. The word anti carries the idea of being “in place of”. He will step into the position that rightly belongs to Jesus Christ. The world that rejected the true Messiah will one day embrace a false messiah who will promise peace, security and prosperity.
Revelation gives us a sobering description of what is coming:
Revelation 13:16–18
“And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is 666.”
Imagine a world in which the ability to buy or sell is completely controlled by one global authority. No cash to carry, no PINs to remember, no need for traditional banking systems—the entire economic system controlled by the Antichrist and connected to his authority and worship.
We are not there yet, and we should be careful not to claim that every new financial technology is the mark of the beast. But as Christians, we should recognise that the world is increasingly capable of implementing the kind of global economic control that Revelation describes.
Watching the World Through the Word
As we watch the effects of the continuing conflict in the Middle East, involving Iran, Israel and the United States, together with the involvement of Yemen and the Gulf nations, we can see how quickly instability in one region can affect the wider world.
Oil prices, shipping, international trade, supply chains and national economies can all be affected by conflict in the Middle East. Economic instability can create fear, and fear can create a desire for someone who promises to bring everything under control.
And that is precisely the kind of environment in which the Antichrist will eventually appear to the world as a solution.
The first rider of Revelation 6 gives us a picture of this coming deception:
Revelation 6:2
“And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.”
He will appear to offer what the world desperately wants—peace, stability and leadership—but behind the appearance will be deception and destruction.
Daniel also warned us about the character of this coming ruler:
Daniel 7:8
“There were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking pompous words.”
He will be persuasive. He will be a remarkable communicator. His ability to deceive will be enhanced by his words, his charisma and his apparent ability to solve problems that have overwhelmed the nations.
Economic Warnings for Us
Even here in Australia, we can see how economic mismanagement and political decisions can affect the prosperity and stability of a nation. We are blessed with enormous natural resources, yet poor decisions can weaken a nation and make it increasingly vulnerable to economic pressures from outside.
But the Bible gives us an even deeper warning about money. The problem is not money itself; the problem is the love of money.
1 Timothy 6:10
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
Money can be a blessing and a useful servant, but it becomes a cruel master when our hearts begin to worship it.
As you read the news and watch the political and economic movements taking place around our world, keep your eyes firmly upon the Word of God. We should be informed, but we must not be consumed by fear. We should watch what is happening in the world, but interpret what we see through the Scriptures.
The world is heading towards a time unlike anything it has ever experienced.
Yet our hearts need not be troubled.
God is not surprised by any of this. His prophetic plan has not been interrupted. Nothing happening in the Middle East, in the world economy, or in the political affairs of nations has taken God by surprise.
We Are Not in Darkness
Paul reminds us:
1 Thessalonians 5:1–6
“But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them…
But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day… Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.”
What a wonderful contrast!
The world is in darkness—but we are sons of light.
The world will be deceived—but we have the truth of God’s Word.
The world will put its trust in a false messiah—but we belong to the true Messiah, Jesus Christ.
The world will look for security in economic systems and political leaders—but our security rests in the sovereign God who holds the future in His hands.
And Paul concludes with these words:
1 Thessalonians 5:9–11
“For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us… Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.”
So, watch the news—but keep your eyes on Jesus.
Watch the economy—but trust God’s provision.
Watch the nations—but rest in God’s sovereignty.
Watch the signs—but do not live in fear.
The time is growing short. The world is moving towards a day like no other in its history. But for the Christian, the future is not something to fear—it is something to look forward to.
Our hope is not in the economy, governments, currencies, or world leaders.
Our hope is in Jesus Christ.
